A striking matched pair of 19th-century hand-colored maritime lithographs commemorating Commodore James Biddle and the U.S. Sloop of War Hornet. One depicts the celebrated 1815 engagement and capture of HMS Penguin, with period inscriptions detailing the vessels, commanders, armament, and casualties. The companion references Biddle’s command in the Indian Ocean in 1815.
Beautifully aged with muted hand coloring and housed in matching gilt wood frames. Wonderful pieces of early American naval and War of 1812 history.
